Il-Ryun Chung composition


1984-89 first guitar and composition lessons with Carlo Domeniconi and decisive preparation for the future through a comprehensive musical education by the exceptional musician.
1989-1995 further studies in composition at the Berlin University of the Arts with Jolyon Brettingham-Smith. 
Since 2009 artistic director of the AsianArt Ensemble in Berlin.
2011 Performance of the 80-minute concert work "Part of Nature" twice at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul. 
2012-2013 Compositions for ensembles consisting of Asian and Western instruments, including "GRAVITY" for Daegeum, Sheng, Basskoto and Ensemble, commissioned by ernst von siemens musikstiftung for the festival SOUNDSCAPE EAST ASIA.
2012-2014 Artistic director of the concert series "Gugak Lecture Concerts" at the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin.
2014 World premiere of the epic music drama Cassandra for pansori and Korean instruments at the National Gugak Center in Seoul.





2016 Composer in Residence with the National Orchestra of Korea. 
2017 Artistic director of the festival for contemporary transcultural music TURBULENZEN in Berlin. 
Since February 2014 head of the composition/contemporary music department and since 2019 professor at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt.
2023 World premiere of the work "Cycle - Concerto for Sheng and Chinese Orchestra" by Sheng master Wu Wei and the Kaoshiung Chinese Orchestra in Taiwan.
